Leatherback turtle nesting season begins

The nesting season for leatherback turtles on the Caribbean Coast has begun. In the South Caribbean they generally come ashore to lay their eggs between April and July.

This generally happens at night on the more remote parts of the coast including Gandoca and in the Gandoca-Manzanillo reserve. If you do see a turtle on the beach do not approach her, stay far away, wear dark clothing and don't shine lights or use camera flashes. This critically endangered species needs all the help they can get.
